Pat DiNizio, Pat DiNizio/Buddy Holly
* * * PLAYING CRICKETS
Smithereens frontman Pat DiNizio reworks the songs of Buddy Holly, who died 50 years ago next week, as a tribute that locates the commonalities between the two artists, then expands on them. DiNizio never simply re-creates Holly's originals: He turns That'll Be the Day into a cappella doo wop and Raining in My Heart into a John Lennon-like melancholy. — Brian Mansfield
