1st recorded at HOV! Doughboys, Is It Now? (just out):
"Sixties garage-rockers who made a couple of singles (I think I have one
of 'em) reunited in recent years and now have issued an album that combines spirited,
authentically tough-sounding period covers (The Animals' I'm Crying, Alvin Robinson's
great Down Home Girl as filtered through the Stones' version) with similarly grounded
originals that admirably capture the vibe of the era. (One member, Richard X.
Heyman, has released a series of fine pop-rock albums since the '80s that are
also worth checking out.)" -Ken Barnes, USA TODAY Blogspot

Theater Mag "I rocked out with Meet the Smithereens!
and had a total blast. Do you know about this record? It's a faithful re-creation
of Meet the Beatles!, performed with the perfect combination of reverence and
joy by New Jersey's best-ever bar band. And, since the Smithereens are decades
older than the Beatles were, the old guys put something deeper and darker into
the sound. Nothing can touch the original's pure joy. But the Smithereens plug
right into my middle-aged fantasies, and the big sound, taken at, ahem, room-filling
volume, was a thrill I won't soon forget. Soundstage depth was good per se but
was not quite as deep as with my favorite high-end speakers." |

ROLLING
STONE GAVIN EDWARDS 3 out of 5 stars
The improbably long-lived Smithereens have never been shy about their British
Invasion influences -- now they make them more obvious with an inessential but
fun tribute to the Beatles' American debut album. The Smithereens cover all twelve
Meet the Beatles!'s tracks, hewing closely to the original arrangements, down
to the hand claps in "I Want to Hold Your Hand." They add some deadpan
vocals and a bit of extra guitar crunch, particularly goosing the ballad "Till
There Was You" -- and against all odds they succeed in making forty-three-year-old
music sound new again. |

Weeds singer/drummer/guitarist Kurt Reil served as engineer and co-producer of
the project, which was recorded at his House of Vibes facility in Highland Park.

New Releases Recorded At The House Of Vibes 7TH
INNING STRETCH This is the soundtrack disc for the recent ESPN TV special
featuring Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens. The show and this disc include newly-recorded
versions of Smithereens classics like "Girl Like You", "Only A
Memory" and "Blood And Roses". Recorded and mixed by Kurt Reil
and performed by the Smithereens. "Making new recordings of these songs was
like Recording 101", says 'House' producer/engineer Kurt Reil. "My job
was to recreate those great songs that I grew up with. I had access to the producers
who cut those tracks, and I was able to pick their brains. And of course I was
working with the Smithereens themselves who cut the tracks to begin with. It was
a great learning experience." 7TH INNING STRETCH IS currently airing on ESPN2.
The Soundtrack is available from Koch Entertainment. |

CBS TELEVISION USES GRIP WEEDS SONG FOR NEW FALL PRIMETIME
SERIES : CBS
licensed Whats In Your Mind--
hear a
sample now (from the album The Sound Is In You) for the promotional campaign
of the new Fall crime drama series CRIMINAL
MINDS, starring Mandy Patinkin . The song is featured as the core
music for the 20 and 30 second-long CRIMINAL MINDS promotional commercials currently
running in heavy rotation on national CBS stations and affiliates throughout the
end of September, as well as on basic cable, radio and CBS website streaming. Whats
In Your Mind was discovered by CBS Director of Drama Promotions
Brad Roe, through an iTunes search. According to Roe, The title of The Grip
Weeds song had grabbed me, but it was the chorus that was exactly what we needed,
as the lyrics sell the premise of the show. I also liked the energy of the song
and felt that its contemporary sound would appeal to a younger demographic.
The song was recorded at the House of Vibes and remixed there to great effect
for the Rainbow Quartz reissue of The Sound Is In You. - HOV recently
acquired a set of Universal
Audio UAD-1 digital audio plug-ins, which emulate many classic EQ's
and compressors which greatly enhance our digital recording capabilities! On the
Analog side, we've also taken delivery of a pair of Old
School Audio's MP-1 preamps- warm and fuzzy! 5/10/05
- The Smithereens recently returned to HOV to do a remake of their classic "In
A Lonely Place" for an upcoming movie soundtrack. House engineer/producer/Grip
Weed Kurt Reil played the vibes, and Kristin Pinell (Grip Weeds) took on Suzanne
Vega's harmony vocal. Click
here for a report from Dave's Smithereens Page... Recently issued
on the Koch label is God Save the Smithereens- Deluxe Edition, which includes
their version of the Beatles' "I Want to Tell You", recorded at HOV
a couple of years ago. Legendary bassist Graham Maby (Joe Jackson, Ian Hunter)
was here at HOV this past month as well! His playing was flawless of course- we
got his sound and he did his track in one take... |

- The studio just acquired an awesome Universal Audio 2-1176 compressor, and also
welcomed a 1965 Hammond L-100 organ to the HOV vintage keyboards collection. Think
Small Faces and Procol Harum!
|
2/24/04
- The studio recently purchased a new hard disk recording system which includes
a Mac G5 computer and a MOTU A/D interface with Digital Performer software. The
system can be slaved to our 2" analog tape machine for big warm sounds and
limitless editing capabilities! |
